With the start of fire season here, you have likely spent the past several months training, eating healthy and getting in shape so you can perform your best on the fireline. But even though your pack test might be done, your need for fitness is not. It’s easy to lose track of your activity, food intake, hydration and sleep, but luckily there are several apps and tools out there to help you stay in tip top shape this season.
We’ve compiled a list of our ten favorite health apps:
- If you like to workout but run out of ideas, Workout Trainer can help. This app hosts a library of workout routines and step-by-step video instructions to ensure your form is up to snuff. An interactive fitness wizard allows you to personalize and customize your routine.
- Runkeeper our favorite of the running apps. By tapping into your phone’s GPS, you can track your running, cycling, hiking, and other distance activities. It will also keep track of and report your pace, distance, total exercise time and calories burned.
- Like to listen to music while you run or hike? PaceDJ allows you to set a target pace and matches songs from your music library to match your running tempo. So let the beat energize you, and keep those feet moving.
- Track your calorie intake, meals, water intake and calories burned with MyFitnessPal. Whether you are trying to put on weight, lose weight or maintain your weight, MyFitnessPal personalizes your intake goals to match your goals.
- Not so limber after a day of cutting timber? Injuries can be prevented by practicing gentle stretching and yoga. Don’t worry if you’re not exactly the “yoga type,” Daily Yoga is a training app with over 40 different yoga sessions. The poses range from simple to complex.
- If you want to look like Popeye, JEFIT is a great tool for strength training and bodybuilding. The app contains a database of thousands of routines sorted by targeted body part. Use the workout routine planner, follow the instructions and log and track your progress all in one place.
- If you want your body (and not your pockets) to get lighter, GymPact can help. You set a goal of how many workouts you want to do each week, and if you do not reach that goal, you must pay a penalty for each missed workout. But don’t try to cheat. It keeps dibs on your workouts by ensuring that you either check in at the gym or log a workout in RunKeeper.
- Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock will make your early morning as pleasant as possible. The app uses your phone’s accelerometer to track how often you move during the night, and from there is can determine the sleep stage you’re in. You set a range of times for waking up, and your alarm goes off when you’ve entered a lighter sleep stage.
- Feeling stressed? Magic Mind combines ambient music, nature sounds, and isochronic tone frequencies to help you relax, sleep, meditate and distress. So instead of counting sheep, give this app a shot.
- If you’re motivated by friendly competition, the community-centric Fitocracy is the app for you. Earn points for each of your workouts, and see how your results stack up to against your online friends. The app contains hundreds of workouts and makes it easy to track your activity.
